Okanagan Lavender & Herb Farm is pleased to announce the award of an Agri-Tourism Associate position through Young Canada Works (YCW)

This work experience will allow you to develop and refine your customer service skills at a vertically integrated farm in the city of Kelowna in the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia using your knowledge of English and French.

You will learn how to engage, entertain and educate visitors from all over the world about the operation of an herb farm, including the cultivation and harvest, distillation and processing, and production and selling of herbs as value added products.

At Okanagan Lavender & Herb Farm we welcome French speaking visitors throughout each day and the entire season. The main objective of this position is to employ an individual who can assist our French speaking visitors when they arrive at the farm and ensure their experience is educational, experiential and memorable. A significant effort has been made to develop and translate French language information for children and adults at the farm and as an Économusée site, there is exceptional bilingual interpretive signage about the traditional craft of distillation practised. Signage and brochures are extremely helpful, but nothing can replace an individual who welcomes visitors in their native language and escorts on their visit to the farm.

The position requires an individual able to converse in English and French with multi-generational visitors. Using the translations the farm has developed, the individual needs to learn the vocabulary of the farm which includes general plant knowledge, processing and manufacturing information of the crop of herbs grown and distilled on-site and assisting customers with their questions and purchases in the retail shop.

The Agri-Tourism Associate position will commence on August 28th and conclude on December 15th in Kelowna, B.C. The wage is $13.50/hour for a 40 hour work week.

Students enrolled in agriculture, horticulture, tourism, business, arts or language studies are encouraged to apply. The ideal candidate will be attentive to detail, be flexible and adaptable to change, have great initiative and creativity and is passionate about the outdoors, farming and sustainability issues.

Okanagan Lavender & Herb Farm is located in the city of Kelowna in the Okanagan Valley in British Columbia. The valley has a semi-arid climate and is an internationally recognized wine growing region. Situated on the shores of Okanagan Lake, the valley is well known for water sports and outdoor activities including hiking and cycling. There are numerous restaurants offering regional cuisine and a vibrant Farmer’s Market every Wednesday and Saturday. For more information on the city and its merits, visit the Tourism Kelowna website at www.tourismkelowna.com

Two of our past candidates arranged room and board homestays within the city which were very successful for them. In 2015, our candidate was able to board at a farm nearby, if this option is of interest, I can put the candidate in contact with the home owner.

Many staff bicycle up to the farm, but you must be physically fit to do so as it is a hilly ride. One year a staff member had a moped to get to the farm on and that worked very well for him. Our public transit is able to get people to a location 1km from the farm, https://bctransit.com/kelowna/schedules-and-maps Route #15, however the schedules are not always convenient.
