Digital Development Assistant

To be part of the museum curatorial team to develop a digital collection database. Working with a computerized software system to gather digital information via; photo reproduction, scanning, digital photography and document reproduction. Occasional assignments which will include assisting with the permanent collection of the Haida Gwaii Museum and, assisting visitors and researchers in gaining knowledge of Haida history and culture. Digitizing and scanning of artifact and photo collection into a digital computer system. Provide guided interpretive tours to visitors; assist public in orientation to Centre; assist in library research by community members. Assist in museum website maintenance and upkeep. Update basic web pages and develop web information content. The Assistant will assess archival Images (photographs, postcards, and slides) for conservation concerns, scan images, develop an image library, and participate in the development of a virtual exhibit. The Assistant will also participate and support various aspects of the unit's activities including acquisition of materials, accessioning, arrangement and description, reference, and general outreach. Should be familiar with document scanners, database software, and the use of the Internet.

• Knowledge of metadata standards, principles of collection development, arrangement and description, and basic archival conservation practices, and skills in electronic file manipulation are preferred.
• A strong ability to organize, adhere to timelines, communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and work as part of a team is essential
• Ability to deal with the public in a courteous and tactful manner
• Ability to work with minimal supervision.
• Must be able to lift record boxes weighing approximately 50 lbs.

Since this job is funded through the Young Canada Works Program, the successful applicant must also meet the following criteria:
• is registered in the YCW on-line candidate inventory;
• is legally entitled to work in Canada;
• is a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or has refugee status in Canada;
• is between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
• has completed the candidate eligibility form prior to hiring;
• be willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment; and
• not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with YCW.

The museum is located in Skidegate on Haida Gwaii, British Columbia
The wage is $ 18.00 per hour.
This position is funded by Young Canada Works and subject to hiring restrictions imposed by that program. The position is open only to applicants between the ages of 15 and 30, who attended school full time last year and intend to return to school full time next year.
