About the Gallery
Located in the Halifax Regional Municipality, MSVU Art Gallery is on the campus of Mount Saint Vincent University, situated on Mi’Kma’ki, the ancestral, unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq.
MSVU Art Gallery was opened in a purpose-built space in 1971. Through its exhibitions and programs, the Gallery functions as a visual arts resource for the University and surrounding communities. Devoting a significant part of its activities to the representation of women as cultural subjects and producers, the Gallery presents the work of artists and artisans from the Atlantic region and beyond. MSVU Art Gallery aims to foster informed, critical responses to works of contemporary and historical art, carrying out regular publishing and public programming activities. On behalf of the University, MSVU Art Gallery manages a collection of art that reflects priorities set by the exhibition program and the University’s mission.
About the Opportunity
MSVU Art Gallery is seeking an independent, detail-oriented, and creative graduate to fill the role of Curatorial Assistant. The ideal candidate will be energetic, eager to learn about contemporary art galleries, and will share the Gallery’s commitment to social responsibility.
The Curatorial Assistant’s objective is to support MSVU Art Gallery’s curatorial initiatives (including development of contemporary art exhibitions, production of publications, public engagement, and collections management) while gaining an intimate knowledge of the regular activities of a contemporary art gallery. Contributing to the execution of MSVU Art Gallery’s commitment to accessibility and inclusivity, the Curatorial assistant will work closely with the Education and Outreach Coordinator to enhance all areas of public engagement, and will support the Director/curator in delivery of a thoughtful and provocative program.
Through this position, the successful candidate will gain experience in interpretive services, curatorial research, museum best practices, and promotional content development. Honing their adaptability in an environment that champions accessibility and inclusivity, the Curatorial Assistant will come away from this internship comfortable and competent to navigate employment in any small to mid-sized contemporary art gallery.
The Curatorial Assistant will engage in regular tasks, such as developing exhibition and collection related social media content or copy editing printed matter, as well as take on finite assignments, including coordinating publication of exhibition printed matter (e.g. brochure) for an exhibition.
This opportunity is well suited for graduates of Arts and Culture Administration or Management, Curatorial Studies, Museum Studies, Fine arts or Art History. Preference will be given to applicants holding Master’s Degrees.
The successful candidate will be able to work on a PC, have a basic understanding of the use and function of Microsoft Office Suite applications (Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Outlook), have a technical understanding of social media, will have excellent presentation skills, and be interested in contemporary art. Ideal candidates will have some familiarity with WordPress, InDesign and Adobe Suite, MailChimp, and experience working with collections management databases (e.g. Access, FileMaker, TMS). Experience working in a museum or art gallery environment is considered an asset.
