Are you a recent university graduate looking for an opportunity to work up-close and personal with an exciting archival project? The Cape Breton University Beaton Institute seeks a mature, motivated individual to assist with its Historic Cape Breton Newspaper Project. If you are a recent university graduate with a high degree of attention to detail and a thorough approach to projects, then this could be the job for you.

The Digitization Technician will work with the Archivist and Digital Archivist The Digitization Technician will also assist with reference duties and therefore keep regularly scheduled hours and help users with their research inquiries.

Our ideal candidate has an undergraduate or graduate degree in Archival Studies, history, cultural studies, or an equivalent field related to culture and heritage. The Digitization Technician will work with the Archivist and Digital Archivist to digitize and place a selection of historic Cape Breton newspapers online. Working with both hardcopy and microfilm formats, the intern will scan, provide descriptions and create an online project page for these valuable examples of local documentary heritage. This project will create a more efficient reference service, and provide faster and easier access to archival collections for both staff and public access. This project will also provide the intern with excellent professional development and networking opportunities.

The candidate should be proficient in the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and internet applications. While not a requirement, a background in information science and proficiency with database software are considered an asset. Familiarity with AtoM is considered an asset.

The candidate must have excellent oral and written language skills. S/he should have strong interpersonal, planning, and organizational, and time management skills. S/he must also possess the ability to work independently and/or collaborative with others to achieve overall goals and objectives.
