Science Presenter (Temporary Full Time - June 4 - August 31,2018)
TELUS World of Science - Edmonton (TWOSE) inspires life-long learning as we create a positive science and technology culture in our region.
The science centre is a non-profit organization designed to motivate people to learn about and contribute to advances in science and technology to strengthen themselves, their families, and their community.
Position Summary:
Reporting to the Director of Science, the Science Presenter engages with all guests by initiating conversation, encouraging exploration, and facilitating programs in the exhibit galleries. They create memorable experiences with our guests by generating an atmosphere of excitement and curiosity. The Science Presenter is an outgoing and enthusiastic staff member who can turn even the most ordinary of moments into ultimate science experiences for TELUS World of Science visitors.
The Science Presenter reports to Director, Science with supervision by Staff Scientists and Lead, Science Presenter.
Duties and Responsibilities:
•The Science Presenter must be an outgoing and enthusiastic staff member who can turn even the most ordinary of moments into ultimate experiences for TWOSE visitors.
•Communicate confidently to engage guests by initiating conversation and encouraging exploration in the exhibit galleries.
•Initiate and lead inquiry and skill based programs ensuring the safe use of activity materials, spaces, and exhibits.
•Prepare materials for programming as required.
•Ensure program components are set up and all areas are cleaned appropriately.
•Operate various computer and electronic equipment used in the galleries and theatres
•Provide superior customer service for all guests in alignment with TWOSE customer service standards.
•Respond to guests’ general science questions as well as inquiries about TWOSE and our programs.
•Ensure the galleries are well maintained providing feedback on operations or guest interaction.
•Positive Role model for TWOSE volunteers and thrive as part of team of people with diverse backgrounds
•Science Presenters will be trained to work in the galleries and those who demonstrate aptitude, knowledge and responsibility may also be trained to work in the Planetarium and Live Science Stage locations
Knowledge and Abilities:
• Demonstrated knowledge of science.
• Ability to communicate science to audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
• Strong outgoing personality with the desire to share, collaborate, create and experiment with others.
• Proven experience in public speaking, customer service, and program delivery.
• Ability to adapt quickly and learn new skills.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Education:
• High School Diploma supplemented by post-secondary education
• Theatrical/drama skills are an asset.
• Multilingual ability is an asset.
Salary: wage: $15.92 - $19.95 per hour as per the 2016 Collective Agreement
Hours of work: Must be available evenings, weekdays, weekends and holidays. Scheduling of shifts would be Friday to Tuesday or Wednesday to Sunday with 37.5 hours per week
