The Kelowna Museums Society manages and maintains three unique museums: Okanagan Heritage Museum, Okanagan Wine and Orchard Museum, and the Okanagan Military Museum. Collections Technician

The Kelowna Museums Society has an exciting opportunity for a student to spend their summer working behind the scenes at a fascinating and fun institution! The Collections Technician is actively involved in assisting the institution in upholding professional standards in the collections management and preservation of its unique collections. The Collections Technician’s primary duty is cataloging artefacts. Cataloguing involves photographing, researching, documenting, deaccessioning and numbering artefacts. The Collections Technician also helps preserve collections through proper care and handling and by practicing preventative conservation.

Main Duties:
- Catalogue new artefact donations in the PastPerfect museum database
- Update collections records
- Photograph artefacts using proper lighting and photo editing techniques
- Provide proper storage enclosures for objects in storage
- Prepare artefacts for transport
- Carryout basic artefact cleaning treatments
- Occasionally assist other museum departments
- General museum duties as required, including front desk coverage

Requirements:
- Standard summer student eligibility requirements (Young Canada Works)
- Self-motivated and detail oriented
- Exceptional research and computer skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Highly organized
- Sensitive to the requirements for handling artefacts
- Satisfactory criminal record check
- Experience working in a museum is an asset
- Desired level of education: Post-Secondary

Pay scale: $13.88/hr
Duration: Full time (35 hrs/week, 16 weeks), May 7 to August 24, 2018

The working language is English; French, Spanish, Cantonese or Mandarin would be an asset to the position.
