About the Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery:
Owned and operated by the County of Lambton and located in the centre of Sarnia’s downtown cultural district, a block from the waterfront, the Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery offers a wide range of exhibitions, tours, lectures and programs. Housed in the Thom building (also known as the Saks building), the gallery’s permanent collection comprises over 1,200 Canadian historical and contemporary works. Revolving exhibitions from the gallery’s permanent collection along with temporary exhibitions by contemporary artists and works from other galleries open a window on the past and help preserve and present our visual culture heritage locally and nationally.

Position Overview:
The Community Art & Studio Assistant will work alongside education staff to develop program offerings for children and teens through the after school art programs as well as summer art classes. You will also have the opportunity to work on special projects such as ArtWalk, First Friday, and other community events held in Sarnia's downtown.

The Community Art & Studio Assistant position will have the opportunity to work with education staff, art instructors and contemporary artists by assisting them with the delivery of programs during the summer months to participants ages 9 - 18. They will also behind-the-scenes experience in the day-to-day operations of a public art gallery, as well as experience organizing and facilitating fine art programs. The Community Art & Studio Assistant will have the opportunity to learn about the operation of a Category A public art gallery and from work directly with the public.

Qualifications:
The candidate must be currently enrolled in Studio Art, Visual Arts, or Fine Art courses at the University or College level. The successful candidate must be returning to school in the fall. Superior organizational skills, attention to detail, ability to work independently, and solid computer skills are required. An understanding of video and new art media is an asset.

• are a Canadian Citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible);
• are legally entitled to work in Canada;
• will be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
• are will to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
• will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed with the program;
• have been a full-time student (as defined by your educational institution) in the semester preceding the YCW assignment; and
• intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following the YCW assignment.
