TITLE: Heritage Research Intern

LOCATION: Peterborough, Ontario

WAGE: $20.82/hr

STARTING DATE: May 7, 2018

ENDING DATE: October 19, 2018

MAIN PURPOSE:
To provide research support and assist with projects designed to enhance awareness of heritage preservation

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Research on historic properties and landscapes in Peterborough for inclusion in the Story Map and mobile app being developed by the City as a tool to explore local heritage and culture. This requires significant archival and onsite research to identify and explore points of interest for a publically available web and mobile application
2. Development of thematic stories and walking tours for inclusion in the Story Map and web application integrating GIS data and historic research into an accessible and engaging mobile app for non-specialist use. This requires the use of current software and processes and archival research to build a useable product that allows users to explore the geography, culture, and history of the City

Through this project, you will develop a number of valuable skills in the research and presentation of heritage resources including:
• GIS software and database skills, including the use of Story Maps for public engagement with geographic data;
• Oral and written communication skills through staff meetings and presentations, and by research reports and web copy;
• Information management skills by becoming proficient in indentifying, collecting analyzing and managing cultural resource data, including archival material;
• Interpersonal skills through participation in projects and tasks with municipal staff from across the corporation and community volunteers;
• Project/task management skills by developing independent work plans requiring careful time and resource management.

If you are the ideal candidate, you will have:
• A strong interest and relevant experience and/or education in heritage preservation;
• Excellent writing and communication skills;
• An interest and some relevant experience in GIS and/or database software and/or computer systems;
• Excellent writing and communication skills;
• Strong interpersonal skills;
• A good working knowledge of Microsoft office;
• Creativity, motivation and the ability to manage complex projects;
• An interest in the operations of municipal government;
• Intermediate photography and photo editing skills including competency working with photography software such as Photoshop.
