The Centre de musique canadienne au Quebec is located in downtown Montreal in a busy area surrounded by businesses, universities and mixed housing and close to a Metro station. It is part of a very multicultural community and is a leader in the cultural and heritage sector. The CMCQ holds a physical archive of original scores, a library, a digital library and a digital archive of archival recordings of the premieres of composers’ music.

Job Duties
The Metadata Assistant will help the library staff in Quebec and bilingual National Librarian to fully integrate the scores of Quebec composers into the CMC’s country wide website. Currently scores which are catalogued on the website require numerous metadata fixes. There are no viewable or downloadable scores available for viewing and there is no pricing for pdf or print on demand scores. This goal has caused a huge backlog of work needing to be done for which the CMCQ does not have the staffing. The student would work with the Quebec Library staff and the National Librarian to organize these submissions. This would involve scanning scores and materials only available in hard copy and organizing them for proper display on the website, for library copies and for print requests. The student would also catalogue and upload the scores, archival sound clips and other media for display and access on the website. The original scores will be deposited in the CMCQ’s archive to be preserved. This work with library staff in Quebec and the bilingual librarian will help reduce a backlog of Quebec-composed scores that we wish to make accessible via the CMC’s website www.musiccentre.ca so that all Canadian composers’ legacies will be preserved and displayed.
The CMCQ hopes to hire a student who is bilingual and has music training and a great interest in music, and who has good computer/database/library skills. Fields of studies could be music history, music education, music composition, information management, information technology, audio/media archive management.
