The University of Alberta Art Collection includes over 10,000 art, ethnographic and historical objects collected over the last 100 years. The focus of this project will be the O.C. Edwards Collection, a group of over 300 indigenous objects collected by Dr. O.C. Edwards (a medical doctor employed by the federal government), and his wife Henrietta Muir Edwards (a member of the Famous Five), from Alberta and Saskatchewan in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

University of Alberta Museums, with the assistance of Young Canada Works, is looking to hire a Collections Assistant: O.C. Edwards Collection.

Under the guidance of our collection management and curatorial teams, the Collections Assistant will:

• Learn applicable University of Alberta policy and procedures, especially those pertaining to museums and collections
• Assist with developing protocols for researching, care and handling, and housing indigenous objects
• Assist with the creation and implementation of re-housing and storage solutions using protocols developed
• Inspect collections for signs of insect infestation or other potential issues and implement remedial measures
• Document physical characteristics of an artifact, and employ both primary and secondary sources (e.g. consultations with Indigenous crafts persons, archives, conduct oral histories) to further research the people who made them

The ideal candidate for this position should:

o be a senior undergraduate or graduate student in a related field such as anthropology, ethnography, material culture studies, Indigenous studies, or human ecology
o have the desire and passion to work in a research collection setting in the future
o have some prior research experience
o have some prior experience handling museum objects
o computer skills with an ability to use databases and a proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
o work well as an individual and in team oriented environments
o be able to lift 50 lbs and use stairs
o meet the qualifications as stipulated by Young Canada Works

This position runs from 14 May, 2018– 31 August, 2018. The rate of pay is $18.07 /hr, based on a 35 hour week, plus 4% vacation pay and 3.46% stat holiday pay.
