The University of Alberta Laboratory for Vertebrate Paleontology is an exceptional collection of fossil vertebrate animals, including jawless vertebrates, fishes, amphibians, lizards, marine reptiles, dinosaurs, and birds. One of the finest collections of its kind in Canada, it contains more than 50,000 specimens, and is actively used by researchers and students. Specimens range from 450 million to 10,000 years old, with significant fossils highlighting unique discoveries that address major evolutionary questions. To be accessible and preserved for future research, newly acquired field collections must be stabilized, inventoried, and organized into existing storage.

University of Alberta Museums, with the assistance of Young Canada Works, is looking to hire a Collections Assistant: University of Alberta Laboratory for Vertebrate Paleontology. Under the guidance of our curatorial and collection management teams, the Collections Assistant will:
• Learn applicable University of Alberta policy and procedures, especially those pertaining to museums and collections
• Assist with the creation and implementation of re-housing, storage and stabilization solutions using collection best practices
• Learn and apply fossil preparation techniques
• Become proficient at entering location information into the database

The ideal candidate for this position should:
• be enrolled in an undergraduate degree in a related field such as paleontology or biology’
• have the desire and passion to work in a research collection setting in the future
• have some prior experience handling museum objects and in particular paleontology specimens
• computer skills with an ability to use databases and a proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
• work well as an individual and in team oriented environment
• able to lift 50 lbs, use stairs
• meet the qualifications as stipulated by Young Canada Works

This position runs from 14 May, 2018 – 10 August, 2018. The rate of pay is $15.20/hr. Qualified individuals should submit a letter of introduction, a current resumé and the names of three references by midnight on 29 April, 2018 to Christina Marocco, Administrative Team Lead:
