Description: Over a 16-week term the Heritage Assistant will support the Museum’s visitor services by researching and writing a report on accessibility for visitors with hearing, vision and developmental disabilities to the Museum of Industry, including identifying best practices, evaluating the Museum galleries and exhibits for accessibility, and outlining recommendations for improvement. The Heritage Assistant will also assist with the delivery of educational programming to school aged children, and perform the duties of a gallery docent. S/he is responsible for providing orientation, information and interpretive services to visitors, contributes to the delivery of public and school programs. S/he also performs general gallery maintenance and cleaning functions, provides security for artefacts and performs other duties as required in support of Museum operations.

The successful candidate will be a student in a relevant field like Museum Studies, Canadian Studies, History, Education, or Psychology. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong communication, organization, and interpersonal skills, specifically the ability to develop positive interactions with visitors and provide visitor service to a high standard. Familiarity with computers, including e-mail, Internet, Microsoft Word, Excel, is required. The candidate must be self-motivated, able to work with limited supervision, and able to work as part of a team. Physical requirements include standing, walking, crouching and moving around for extended periods of time, exposure to dust, and the use of common cleaning fluids and ink. Previous experience in public speaking is an asset. Previous experience in education, interpretation, recreational / educational programming or working with children are assets. Fluency in English is required.
