Position: Summer Reading Club Assistant (2 positions)
Location: System-wide involving work at all branches
Duration: 11 Week Temporary Contract (June 11, 2018 – August 24, 2018)
Rate of Pay: $15.00 per hour (35 hours/week)

Position Summary:

The Clarington Public Library is pleased to once again be one of 2,000 libraries across Canada to participate in the TD Summer Reading Club program. The TD Summer Reading Club is Canada’s biggest, bilingual summer reading program for kids of all ages, all interests, and all abilities. It celebrates Canadian authors, illustrators and stories and is designed to inspire kids to explore the fun of reading their way – the key to building a lifelong love of reading. The Summer Reading Club Assistants will:

• Assist in the planning and delivery of multiple weekly programs that present reading as a fun activity
• Work directly with school-aged children to foster their love of reading and use of their Public Library
• Work with community partners to deliver high-quality children’s Summer Reading Club programs
• Assist in the promotion of the TD Summer Reading Club programs in the Clarington Community through displays and a variety of outreach activities

The ideal candidates for these positions will possess the following:

• Current enrollment in a Library Sciences, Masters Library Information Systems or Early Childhood Educator programs or an equivalent combination of related program and related experience to the satisfaction of the Library CEO
• Experience in, and comfortable with, working with large groups of children of all ages
• Experience in, and comfortable with, public speaking and giving presentations to large groups
• Experience in planning programs and activities for children
• Experience in creating promotional displays
• Knowledge of children’s literature, with a concentration on Canadian resources
• Excellent verbal communication skills in English
• Valid Ontario Motor Vehicle Operator’s “G” License and the use of a motor vehicle; a satisfactory driver’s abstract from the Ministry of Transportation (Ontario)
• A satisfactory, current (within last 90 days), Criminal Records Check (CPIC) with Vulnerable Sector Screening, from a Canadian Police Information Centre is required prior to commencing employment

These positions provide an ideal summer employment experience for a post-secondary student in the areas of planning and implementing children’s programs, education, and to introduce, engage and excite children from a wide spectrum of reading ability to the world of literacy and learning through reading.
