Summer Heritage Interpreter needed for the lively and varied Interpretive Program based in Police Point Park in Medicine Hat Alberta.
The student will work with school and special community groups, as well as visitors and the general public. There will be opportunities for developing new events and mobile displays to take to public festivals.
Our Summer student will be based in Police Point Park within the City Limits of Medicine Hat. The Park is located along the South Saskatchewan River and is named Police Point in reference to the NWMP post which was located on the escarpment above what is now the park. As settlement developed, this area was referred to as "the Police's Point". It also was called "the picnic grove", the location of many outings for townspeople. Historical photos show people in long dresses and jackets under the twisted old cottonwoods.

Even earlier than that, this point was important as a named location on the verbal maps of the native people in the region. It was a river crossing, a meeting place, and the site of tree burials.

The Interpretive Program celebrates the human and natural heritage of our prairie region. Most human history is built around the geography of our landscapes. For Medicine Hat, the South Saskatchewan River was a determining factor in the human history both before and after European settlement. The natural resources of the region are now reflected in the economy of our City - industries dependent upon our natural gas reserves, ranching, irrigation and dryland farming, and the many aspects of a City serving as a shopping, health care, and tourism hub.
