The Canadian Canoe Museum is a unique national heritage centre that explores the canoe’s enduring significance to the Peoples of Canada, through an exceptional collection of canoes, kayaks and paddled watercraft. We’re an engaging, family-friendly museum with more than 100 canoes and kayaks on display. Visitors enjoy interactive, hands-on galleries, a scavenger hunt, model canoe building and puppet theatre for children. Through inclusive, memorable and engaging exhibits and programs we share the art, culture, heritage and spirit of paddled watercraft with our communities.

Founded on a collection of the late Professor Kirk Wipper, and established in Peterborough, Ontario, in 1997, the museum’s holdings now number more than 600 canoes, kayaks and paddled watercraft. Together they span the country from coast to coast to coast and represent many of the major watercraft traditions of Canada.

About the Area:
Peterborough is the vibrant city-centre of The Kawarthas region of Ontario. Situated along the Trent Severn Waterway (www.trentsevern.com), connecting Georgian Bay to Lake Ontario, the city also boasts the tallest hydraulic Lift Lock in the world. Aside from The Canadian Canoe Museum, other local cultural destinations in the area include the Peterborough Museum and Archives (www.peterboroughmuseumandarchives.ca), Lang Pioneer Village and Museum (www.langpioneervillage.ca), Petroglyphs Provincial Park (https://www.ontarioparks.com/park/petroglyphs), 4th Line Theatre (https://www.4thlinetheatre.on.ca), and many others.

Trent University (trentu.ca) and Sir Sanford Fleming College (flemingcollege.ca) compliment the city and region as centres for higher learning, attracting youth from across the country and abroad. Trent is renowned for many of its arts programs, including Indigenous Studies, History and Canadian Studies. Fleming on the other hand offers a broad range of very successful diploma programs, including Museum Management Studies. Both institutions are actively involved with the programs and research efforts of the Canadian Canoe Museum.

Lastly, Peterborough continues to celebrate its cultural and industrial heritage through the mission and efforts of the Canadian Canoe Museum (www.canoemuseum.ca). Situated at the gateway to a huge cottage and recreational region in Ontario, Peterborough was also the largest and most prolific canoe-manufacturing hub in the world during over the past century. As such, the location of this museum in this community is not accidental, and as one of the major cultural institutions in the region, it strives to celebrate the many cultures associated with this icon of Canada’s heritage.
