Characteristics of City/Region:

The Municipality of Argyle makes up about one half of Yarmouth County on the southwestern tip of Nova Scotia. This is a rural municipality consisting entirely of villages of various sizes and densities of population. There are no incorporated towns within this district. The Municipality of Argyle is 75% Acadian, with French being the first spoken language for the majority of these people. The remainder of the population is primarily Anglophone descendants of New England Planter and Loyalist settlers. There is also a considerable Metis population in the Municipality represented by the local Métis organizations of Kespu’kwitk Métis Council and Eastern Woodland Métis Nation. The Argyle Township Court House & Archives is located in the village of Tusket, the seat of local government for this municipality. It is located approximately 15 kms from the Town of Yarmouth which has a population of 8,000. The Municipality of Argyle is surrounded by Anglophone areas.

Ferry service between the USA and Yarmouth was terminated in 2010. Prior to that, the ferry service was in place for over a hundred years. The loss of the ferry had a devastating impact on the local economy and tourism. This service was restored in 2014, and we have seen the numbers of visitors/researchers to our Archives and Museum gradually increase. Our archives and surrounding communities are preparing for another revitalized tourist season and anticipate an increase in numbers of visitors/researchers in 2018. Information on places to visit and things to do in the area can be found by visiting the Yarmouth and Acadian Shores Tourism Association’s website: https://www.yarmouthandacadianshores.com.
