The St. Andrews Rectory is a National Historic site located at 374 River Road (corner of River Road and St. Andrews Road) in St. Andrews and is run by the St. Andrews Heritage Committee. The site and surrounding areas are where many of the early Red River Settlers located with nearby heritage sites including St. Andrews Church on the Red, Lower Fort Garry and Captain Kennedy House.

The Museum Coordinator position; working under the supervision and direction of lead Museum volunteers and the Recreation Director, will be responsible for the day-to-day operations, activities and supervision of all the other summer staff.

Project & Job Objectives:
The Museum Coordinator position will be the lead role in the Museum and will be responsible for the day-to-day operations, activities and supervision of all the other summer staff. The museum will be open to the public in the summer months of June, July and August for family visits, group tours and school field trips. The museum shows visitors what life was like for the early Red River Settlement settlers (which include Metis and Indigenous people) through artefacts on display and through interactive hands on activities.

The Museum will offer several special events planned throughout the season including school field trips for grades 1-6 in June. The school program has been designed for students to experience what life was like for early Red River Settlement settlers through displayed artefacts and interactive learning with summer staff and volunteers on site for different activities such as storytelling, wool spinning, log cutting and bannock making to name a few. The Museum Coordinator is responsible for promoting and arranging school and group tours for the season and ensuring all staff are trained and prepared to present to visiting tour groups.

This position will require the student to be able to handle the daily tasks required for the role as set out by the Program Managers on a weekly basis. The Museum Coordinator will be the primary key holder, responsible for all summer staff, as well as all communications to promote the programs and events being held at the St. Andrews Rectory. Working with the public will be a key component of this position and require exceptional customer service skills. The student will take the lead on all projects and must be comfortable in assigning work to other summer students and supervising their work.

Description of Tasks:

Museum Coordinator tasks will include:
• Opening and/or closing the museum as required (key holder)
• Training and supervising all summer student staff and working directly with lead volunteers
• Cleaning, assembling & displaying artefacts as required for viewing (lighting, labeling, directing foot traffic)
• Greeting visitors in person and answering phones and emails
• Promoting and arranging school and group tours, all programs and events and any special events associated with the season
• Promoting and communicating programs and events through social media
• Creating and delivering historical activities and crafts for children's programs, school tours, family nights and special events
• Working with Gift Shop Manager to arrange, display, sell souvenir items from local crafters/vendors (inventory & petty cash control)
• Working with local tourism groups to promote and improve public awareness specific to the St. Andrews Rectory and St. Andrews Heritage
• Completing accurate documentation for daily visitor statistics, gift shop sales and time sheets as required
• Guiding visitors through the museum and explaining the history of Red River Settlement
• Maintaining Acquisition Binders and including photography and records
• Performing other related duties as required (yard maintenance, gardening, trash, recycling, composting)

Candidate Profile:
This position will appeal to university or college students interested in history or a similar field of work (i.e. education, communications, tourism). Knowledge of marketing, advertising, sales or communications would be an asset. Computer and telephone skills are a key component of this position and knowledge of social media platforms is required.

St. Andrews Rectory Museum Hours:
Open 6-days a week from June 4 –August 31; daily from 10 am–5 pm, Wed 10 am–8 pm, Sun 12–5 pm, closed Mondays
