Conservation Trainees will be involved in various aspects of heritage conservation including: surveys of heritage structures and their sites; contributing to heritage condition assessments -relating to all scales of the project including the building, chattels, structural components, built-ins/fittings, furnishings and equipment; contributing to the FSF's archive of modern architecture; and, creation of associated documentation.
Heritage surveying can include photographic, 2-D drawings and 3-D scanning/conversions to virtual documentation of existing conditions, to support the heritage conservation and/or refurbishment of project/building elements and/or to produce supporting research to assist in the data delivery to the public.
Conservation Trainees will be responsible for assisting in the ongoing research relating to heritage materials, construction methods, building codes, and regulations. Some of this research will be prepared for reference in the production of both virtual and physical displays, and workshops/on-line material about the modernist period. Materials will be made available to the general public through the ‘On-line Archives’ initiative of the Foundation, web site blogs, and social media. Planned exhibits will cover work being done on various sites, the Foundations archival projects, and Canadian Modernist Heritage from a national perspective.
These activities will give Conservation Trainees the opportunity to see Heritage conservation as a ‘big picture’ effort.

Conservation Trainees will also be given hands-on training opportunities in specific conservation practices: material analysis, treatments and preservatives applications, heritage surveying, and the documenting and cataloguing of associated work.

Qualifications for Successful Candidate:
- Min 2 yrs into Bachelor of Architectural Studies (equivalencies in Building Science, Heritage Structural Engineering, Architectural Technology, etc)
- Min 2 yrs into Bachelor of Canadian Studies
- Min 2 yrs into Bachelor of History of Art and Architecture (equivalencies in History or Heritage degrees)

Basic computer skills required: architectural/modeling/drawing and MS Office applications.
Project management, web development software and social media skills considered an asset.
A current driver’s license is required. Vehicle will be considered an asset (mileage to be reimbursed).
One of the sites periodically visited, straddles two of the upper plateaus of the south face of the Eardley Escarpment and is accessible only by five flights of stairs, candidate will be able to traverse difficult terrain.
