The Fredericton Region Museum is seeking an Artefact Cataloguing Officer to assist the Collections Committee in the day-to-day care and research of the artefact collection. Duties include but are not limited to planning, coordinating, research, report writing, cataloguing and supervising.

The candidate should have a minimum of two years coursework (preferably in History, Archaeology or Anthropology) and must have excellent computer skills (word-processing, spreadsheet, database and social networking) as well as numeracy skills, demonstrated attention to accuracy and detail, able to maintain organized and effective files and documentation, both in paper and electronically, ability to respond to a variety of callers/visitors courteously and tactfully, must be a self-starter and able to work with minimal supervision and have an appreciation for antiquities. Supervisory skills and bilingualism (French and English) preferred. Some week end and evening work is required.

The greater Fredericton area has approximately 80,000 citizens and is situated along the beautiful St. John River, known as the Rhine of North America. The major employers are Universities and the various levels of government as this is the capital of New Brunswick. Housed in a 10,000 square foot, 3 story, stone, 1842 Military Barracks, the museum building was designated as a National Historic Site in 1965. We are a local non-profit Historical Society operated by volunteers and we lease the building from the province of New Brunswick. The museum is located in the downtown core of Fredericton, which is being marketed as "The Historic Garrison District" making our facility a key element to downtown visitor expectations. There is a public square next to our building that is used for many cultural and tourism events throughout the year. Because of our location and facility, we are expected to actively participate in most of these events. Our regular volunteers are always fully occupied with maintaining the operations of this major (to us) museum, so students are expected to assume the role similar to that of a full-time professional and are given projects that will help build important work skills and their resumes.

This year, the FRM will be continuing with First World War commemoration through the exhibit installed by previous year’s students, publications, summer camps and education projects. We are also continuing with the 150th anniversary of Confederation Celebrations and will be working on the development of new exhibits in 2018-2019 connected to the Loyalist and Acadian experience.

Candidate must meet all eligibility criteria for the Young Canada Works in Heritage Organizations summer jobs program (https://www.canada.ca/en/canadian-heritage/services/funding/young-canada-works/students-graduates/heritage-organizations-students.html).
