The Summer Palaeontology Field Technician will serve a specific role in the research and education mandate of the Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum to organize, operate, and supervise a paid public excavation program at our Pipestone Creek fossil site. The position will both make use of proper palaeontological field techniques and teach those field techniques to museum visitors. A fossil inventory of new specimens will also be made during the collection process, and this inventory will be curated by the Summer Palaeontology Field Technician.

In addition to running this program, as necessary, the position will assist with other palaeontological field work, fossil organization and cataloguing in our collection, and fossil preparation in our fossil lab. The Summer Palaeontology Field Technician will be based out of the Philip J. Currie Dinosaur Museum, with many days spent primarily outdoors in the Peace Region.

The ideal candidate must have the following qualities:

1. Currently attending and will be returning to post-secondary education for a degree in palaeontology, geology, archaeology, museum studies, zoology, biology, science, engineering, or equivalent.
2. Experience working in a major vertebrate fossil excavation site.
3. An Alberta Class 5 or higher Driver’s License or equivalent.
4. Knowledgeable or interested in Alberta’s palaeontology, geology, and/or natural history.
5. Attention to detail, good organizational skills, and the ability to work independently on focussed tasks.
6. Experience training and/or organizing volunteers to perform complex tasks.
7. Fluent in written and spoken English.
8. Basic computer and technology skills, including experience using Microsoft Excel.
9. The ability to lift moderately heavy objects.

Preference will be given to candidates who have:

1. An Alberta Class 1, 2, or 4 Driver’s License or equivalent, First Aid Training, WHMIS Training, or other advanced training.
2. Excellent presentation skills.
3. Experience preparing and/or handling fossils in a lab setting.
4. Supervision experience.
5. Experience with collection database software.
