The position:
The Canadian Heritage Project, developed and managed by the Vancouver Botanical Garden Association, aims to incorporate Canadian natural and cultural heritage into our educational programs by highlighting and complementing our existing collections and resources including the Canadian Medicinal Garden, Canadian Heritage Garden, Cascadia Garden, BC Bird Habitat, and medicine wheel ceremonies. The Canadian heritage educator will be responsible for tasks related to this project in order to meet our objectives.
Responsibilities:
• Learn the VBGA’s overall educational program methodology and program specific content.
• Become familiar with VanDusen Botanical Garden collections, specifically with collections related to Canadian Heritage.
• Connect with existing on-site and external partners, as well as research and create new partnerships with First Nations stakeholder groups.
• Expand our current education programs. This includes developing resources based on Canadian natural and cultural heritage and inviting new First Nations focused community groups to participate in our programs.
• Evaluate, contribute to, and lead educational tours and activities.
• Research and develop a training guide and execute a workshop related to Canadian natural and cultural heritage for our volunteer guides.
Qualifications and experience
• Minimum 2 years post-secondary education in biology, education, First Nations and Indigenous studies or a related field.
• Comfortable delivering educational programs to a wide audience
• Comfortable scheduling and conducting phone and in-person meetings
• Some experience in online, verbal, and/or in-print research
• Able to write fluently in English
• The candidate will require a cleared criminal record check
Assets:
• Speak a second language
• Cultural sensitivity training or related training
• Familiar with Indigenous focused programs in the Lower Mainland
• Knowledgeable and interested in plants and/or gardening
