The Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario is looking to fill the position of Community Outreach Officer from May 7 – September 3, 2017. Reporting to the Museum Curator, the Community Outreach Officer are primarily responsible for running a pilot project in partnership with the Town of Smiths Falls to provide regular guided walking tours during July and August to visitors and residents. Other responsibilities include promoting of the Railway Museum and the community at various outreach events throughout the summer. The Community Outreach Officer will also assist in a variety of day-to-day museum activities, including planning and implementing public programming and special events.

Responsibilities:
- Attend training session and workshop for walking tour best practices
- Research, write and prepare walking tour scripts
- Develop outreach material
- Research regional events and correspond with organizers
- Opening and closing of the museum
- Greeting and providing tours to visitors and groups
- Booking of overnight stays, facility rentals, and group tours
- Collecting admissions
- Assisting with the development and implementation of workshop programs for children and adults (including Summer Camp).
- Deliver lively, effective demonstrations on railway history and technology.
- Identify different audiences and adapt guided tours to suit their specific needs and interests.
- Assist in the development of interpretive programming that educates the visitor and meets the mandate of the museum.
- Answering questions concerning the history of railways in Canada.
- Gift shop sales and keeping the gift shop stocked
- Participates in the day-to-day operation of the museum site
- Assists with set-up for rentals, special events, and programs
- Provides site security for program needs
- Position requires working weekends and some evenings
- Performs other duties as assigned by the curator


Qualifications:
- Must have been a full-time student in the last school year with plans to return to full-time studies in the Fall.
- Studying Museology, History, Hospitality/Tourism or Education.
- Student with an interest in history and/or tourism industry.
- Experience working with children, youth, adults, and seniors.
- Previous experience guiding tours is an asset.
- Customer service training/experience.
- Retail experience is an asset.
- Mature, assertive and self-motivated.
- Outgoing, approachable, and friendly.
- Ability to take initiative and work well independently.
- Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills
- Readily adaptable to meet the situation at hand.
- Bilingualism is an asset.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office required, Adobe Creative Suite is an asset.

Located in the heart of the Rideau Canal, Smiths Falls is large enough to offer the amenities of a town and yet small enough for visitors to experience the closeness of community found in a smaller village.

The Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario promotes tourism in Smiths Falls through our multiple programs, events and festivals, including our Walking Tours and our annual Trainfest, as well as through the development of group tour packages in collaboration with other local townships.
