SALARY RANGE:
$19.68/hr - $22.11/hr, 30 hour work week
SUMMARY OF FUNCTION:
Research, develop, and deliver museum programs designed to teach history to a variety of audiences. Work with historical artifacts. Complete research on assigned topics. Learn historical information as required. Coordinate programming supplies for all summer programs. Provide excellent customer and client service. Successful candidate will work weekends and holidays during work term. Occupational Health and Safety is a major responsibility of this position. All applicants must be registered in the YCW candidates’ inventory.
.Note: Hiring at the TRCA is contingent on the clearance of the Vulnerable Sector Screening. Candidates will be asked for a screening only when they have been selected as the leading candidate.
KNOWLEDGE:
• Registration in history or a related discipline in university. Third or fourth year students preferred. Applicant must be returning to school as a full-time student in fall 2018.
• Demonstrated understanding of 19th century Canadian history.
• Teaching and/or leadership experience in a non-school setting.
• Experience working in museum or heritage setting an asset.
• Excellent verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently, take a leadership role within programming team, and prioritize tasks in a demanding customer-based environment.
SUMMARY OF MAJOR TASKS:
Under general supervision the Heritage Programmer will:
1. Deliver a wide variety of public programs, including interactive discovery stations and artifact discovery programs. Organize all objects, photographs, and artifacts required for successful delivery of the programs.
2. Learn and understand information related to life in 19th century Ontario. Learn information required to deliver previously designed programs.
3. Read minimum of 3 scholarly articles (or equivalent) on a Museum Studies or Public History topic. Prepare for and deliver to programming team an oral summary of theories and ideas expressed in the articles.
4. Work under supervision to develop and perform evaluations of public programs including surveying visitors, consolidating data and providing a report on findings at end of evaluation period.
5. Develop minimum of one Sensory Station, themed to a specific historic building.
6. Research, design and create a new Exploration Kit using primary documents, which will include making props.
7. Work, in leadership capacity, with Family Programmers, to design and create props needed for programs. Ensure all props for all summer programs, including those in Hands On History Centre and historic buildings, are in working order.
8. Participate in program delivery at special events.
9. Work under supervision to maintain supplies and supply area, ensure all “props” (photographs, artifacts, & objects) required for programs are ready and in good repair, oversee repairs to props as needed, and create props as needed.
10. Actively participate as a member of the programming team to evaluate and propose program changes based on visitor and colleague feedback.
11. Meet with heritage professionals working in different fields at Black Creek Pioneer Village including exhibit development, education programming, collections management, public program development, and special event development.
12. Wear and care for the assigned costume articles and accessories according to the guidelines set out by the Costume Department.
13. Work in a safe manner and follow the safety procedures outlined in the safety manuals.
