North Pacific Cannery National Historic Site is seeking a friendly, organized and hard working individual to scan the historic photo collection, map and charts, updating cataloguing entries. This individual will assist in the writing of photo descriptions for an online database and do rehousing and conservation duties as required.

The incumbent will work closely with the General Manager and a contracted Curatoral/Collections Manager to ensure the student learns digitization best practices for scanning, description, post-processing, saving and backup of files. This will give the student an excellent opportunity to develop organization skills with a focus on attention to detail. The student will benefit from working in a team environment with enthusiastic heritage professionals in a pristine wilderness heritage surroundings.

Accommodations are available for those living outside the Prince Rupert/Port Edward region at subsidized rates. It is highly recommended that applicants have a valid driver's licence and access to a vehicle, though not required.

The successful candidate must be a student, currently enrolled in a post secondary program pursuing a career in Canadian History, Museum, libraries or archival studies. The candidate will have exceptional computer skills and experience working with databases. Experience with scanning or other digitization procedures and with indexing/cataloguing would be an asset.

Applicants must be eligible under the Young Canada Works program in order to be considered for the position: legally allowed to work in Canada, currently enrolled in a post secondary institution between the ages of 15 to 30, and returning to school full time in the fall.

Orientation will include an extensive tour of the heritage site, where the incumbent will be briefed on North Pacific Cannery's history, past programs and events, strategic goals, interpretive plan, policies, and procedures. During this orientation the candidate will be introduced to staff and management, and key board members they will be working with throughout the contract. He/she will learn procedures for liaising with other service staff. The candidate will be made aware of emergency procedures and general health and safety.

Supervision will be provided by the General Manager and the contracted Curator/Collections Manager to ensure the candidate has ongoing direction, support and guidance. They will have hands-on training with the Curator/Collections Manager in person, by skype, by email, phone and weekly summary check ins. The Curator/Collections Manager will provide training in digitization best practices (scanning, description, post processing, saving/backing up of files etc.) The onsite General Manager will be available to the candidate 5 days a week to support the project, assist with time management and support independent work opportunities.

North Pacific Cannery is located in pristine wilderness surroundings on the Skeena River in the town of Port Edward, located 20/km south of Prince Rupert with a population of 544. Prince Rupert is a port city with a population of 12,000 and serves as the land, air, and water transportation hub of BC's north coast. The region is characterized by temperate rainforest, resource-based industry and cultural diversity.

One of the goals is to build lasting relationships through the Young Canada Works program. After the project is finished, it is expected that student can rely on the organization to provide a character or professional reference as needed, in addition to guidance and consultation as he/she continues academic or professional pursuits. As much as possible, we hope to ask students back for future opportunities, continuing to benefit from their contributions while helping them gain crucial work experience.

North Pacific Cannery National Historic Site preserves, exhibits and interprets the history of the West Coast Fishing Industry, celebrating its role in the economic and cultural development of the province. The site is integral to a local, regional, and natioinal identity, is significant as a tourist destination and community hub today.

NPC aims to be: a collective memory for the industrial fishery on the Skeena River and British Columbia; a cultural hub for the community, atrracting the local population for arts, social and sporting events; and a key driver of economic transformation in the development of a sustainable tourism industry for the region.
