Like to Plant Events? Interested in arts and culture? Want to learn more about the Townships? Townshippers’ Association is looking for a University-level student of Communications, English Studies, Event Management, or Arts Administration to work as a Festival Administration Assistant for the summer of 2018. Tasks will include: event planning, group registrations, and general support of the Association’s personnel and community volunteers in the organization of the Association’s annual fall cultural festival as well as other cultural activities happening in the Townships throughout the summer.
This position is open to members of the English-speaking minority in Quebec, preferably in the Eastern Townships region. Applications are welcome from women, persons with disabilities, visible minorities or Aboriginal peoples. Candidates must meet the Young Canada Works criteria and be registered at Young-canada-works.canada.ca.
Characteristics of City or Region: The head office of Townshippers’ Association is located in Lennoxville, a bilingual borough of the region’s Queen City, Sherbrooke, in the beautiful, lake-studded Eastern Townships. This region lies between Montreal and Quebec City, and just north of Boston, above the Vermont border. It is part of the Estrie administrative region (www.estrie05.ca) . The area’s rolling hills, mountains, lakes and other natural charms are home to a unique population of both English- and French-speaking peoples. Heritage tourism is a strong industry (see www.townshipsheritage.com for more information), but the city is becoming increasingly known for its cultural scene, with a variety of outdoor concerts, fairs and activities taking place throughout the year, particularly during the summer months.
The town of Lennoxville is home to Bishop’s University, a small English-language liberal arts University whose architecture resembles that of Cambridge University in England. It is connected by bus route to the French-language Université de Sherbrooke (U de S), situated on the other side of the City of Sherbrooke. The U de S has an excellent reputation in a number of fields, including medicine, science and law.
Just outside the city, you find yourself in an urban area replete with rivers, hills, trees, bike paths and historical buildings. Interested in the marks left by the original Aboriginal settlers? Looking for the traditions and structures developed by English-speaking settlers, Loyalists and others? You will be surrounded. Curious about the newer developments of the French-speaking majority and their vibrant cultural life? You will be able to experience it all: music, movies, sports, food and hospitality.
Townshippers’ Association: The Association was founded in 1979 and its mission is to promote the interests of the English-speaking community in the historical Eastern Townships, to strengthen the cultural identity of this community and to encourage the full participation of the English-speaking population in the community at large. We carry out this mission in varied ways, including via an information and referral service, health and social services networking, cultural events and exchanges and initiatives (such as our Make Way for YOUth project) aimed a motivating young people to make their lives in the Townships. Between 1971 and 2001, some 30% of the English-speaking population left the Townships. Our goal is to reverse this trend. See www.townshippers.org for more information.
The Association’s head office is located on the road leading from Lennoxville to downtown Sherbrooke, and is within easy walking distance of the main shopping area of Lennoxville and Bishop’s University. It is also easily accessible via downtown Sherbrooke, either by bus or by bicycle. It is situated in what was previously a school, but is now a community centre housing a variety of non-profit groups serving the English-speaking community. The congenial atmosphere of this location favours both social and professional exchange among the various groups. As a staff member of the Association, you will find yourself in a friendly, inviting environment.
Townshippers’ Association has 11 employees working in the head office, and 3 working in a branch office in Lac-Brome (Knowlton). During your work term, you will get a work station with a computer and internet access; you will also be welcomed by a team of people from varied backgrounds who will orient you, challenge you and include you in the active summer life of the Association. Working for Townshippers’ Association is a bit like joining a family; you will be welcomed and supported by our staff throughout the summer and, if you so chose, you will probably remain in contact with them long after your job finishes, as many of our previous summer students have done.
