Archival Assistant: YCW Summer Job

Job description

The Kule Folklore Centre is pleased to offer a Young Canada Works summer job in heritage for 2018. Based in Edmonton at the University of Alberta, the Archival Assistant will arrange, describe, and digitize ethnographic materials of the Bohdan Medwidsky Ukrainian Folklore Archives – a fieldwork collection documenting cultural expressions of Ukrainian Canadians (customs, traditions, rituals, community life) ranging from mid 1960s to 1990s. The collection consists of predominantly audio interviews, as well as photographs, field notes, and other records.

The Kule Folklore Centre (KuFC) at the University of Alberta is a research unit at the Faculty of Arts. Its mandate is to contribute to Ukrainian and Canadian ethnology - the discovery of truths and dissemination of knowledge about Ukrainian Canadian culture and identity - in the context of the cultural diversity of our world. KuFC houses the Bohdan Medwidsky Ukrainian Folklore Archives (BMUFA) - repository that documents, acquires, arranges, describes, preserves and provides access to cultural heritage of Ukrainian Canadians. It also houses cultural heritage materials of other Ukrainian diaspora communities, and other ethnic groups in Canada.

Qualifications

• Must be a current post-secondary student and meet all the YCW eligibility requirements
• Background in archival science, folklore studies, or information management is desirable
• Familiarity with Canadian history and culture is desirable
• Excellent attention to detail
• Comfort with technology and software
• Ability to learn fast
• Ability to work independently and in a team
• Strong communication skills

The successful candidate will be a mid-program post-secondary student or a graduate student, with a strong interest in archives, research archives, folklore archives, multimedia archives, cultural heritage, audiovisual heritage, Canadian history and culture, and/or preservation of archival materials.

The ideal candidate would be a student in an MLIS, MAS or Media and Cultural Studies program, would have experience working in heritage sector, and/or familiarity with archival science and information management as practised in Canadian context; be proficient in Microsoft Office software (especially Word and Excel); and would be interested in learning more about ethnographic research archival collections, digitization, and access.
