Dalhousie Art Gallery – Archive Assistant

Over the course of the summer, the previous Archive Assistant reorganized the Gallery’s publication archives and began updating the content on our publication database. The new Archive Assistant will continue to update our publication database, expand the online content on the publications page of our website, and other tasks related to our publication archives.

The Archive Assistant will also work with the Gallery’s permanent collection databases (offline and online). We recently launched a new website which includes a searchable database for the Gallery’s and University’s permanent collections. The Archive Assistant will help to populate our permanent collection database with images and descriptive content to improve our public interfaces.

Working with Gallery staff, the Archive Assistant will:
- update the publication database and expand online content about our publications;
- assist with the transfer of publications to the Dalhousie Archives;
- work with Registrar/Preparator to consolidate and identify existing permanent collection image files;
- upload images to the website;
- identify and record existing images of works that need to be re-documented;
- liaise with University Archives staff and participate in regular meetings with gallery staff.

Throughout the project the Archive Assistant will also work with gallery staff on the everyday operations including future exhibition programming, exhibition strike/installation, registration of recent acquisitions, and education and outreach.

The following is a list of experiences and skills that are relevant to the position:
- be enrolled in an post-secondary program of study, and have an interest in Visual Arts, Art History or Museum Studies;
- very good interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing in English; French language skills an asset but not mandatory;
- intermediate research skills;
- knowledge of basic care and handling of archival materials and familiarity with databases is an asset;
- ability to work as a team member, but also self-motivated;
- previous experience working in a gallery is an asset but specialized training will be provided;
- able to work methodically and independently for periods of time with high attention to detail;
- specialized knowledge of art/craft studio practices an asset.

The Gallery will consider equivalent or applicable experience outside of a formal work situation.

Eligibility:
This position is funded by Young Canada Works in Heritage Organizations. A student may be eligible for employment if they:
- are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible);
- are legally entitled to work in Canada;
- will be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
- are willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
- will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) during the Young Canada Works (YCW) work assignment;
- are currently enrolled as a full-time student.
Note: Priority will be given to students who have not previously participated in a summer work experience program.

The Gallery is wheelchair accessible by elevator, and the workspaces are barrier-free with the exception of our kitchen. There is an accessible, gender-neutral washroom with change-table on the second floor of the building.
