Characteristics of City / Region
Winterton is a small community nestled between large hills on the Lower Trinity South shore of the Baccalieu Trail on the Avalon Peninsula on the island of Newfoundland and Labrador. About 150 kms from St. John’s, the town is home to 484 residents and has recently become a summer haven for a number of American and Mainland Canadian citizens who come for the relaxation and the hospitality.
The community was once known as Scilly Cove, and has been settled since before 1675. Residents have always depended on the fishery as a source of income and many of the fishermen over the years were recognized all over Newfoundland as being excellent boat builders.
The Wooden Boat Museum of Newfoundland and Labrador’s mandate is operating as a professional archivist, conservator, exhibitor and transmitter of this province’s knowledge and history of wooden boats, their economic use and contribution to community life. The museum has grown to attract visitors from all around the globe and continues to strive for excellence in the presentation and preservation of the Province’s boat building heritage.
