Answering to the Annapolis Heritage Society’s Executive Director, the Curatorial Assistant will work at the AHS museum sites in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia. Curatorial Assistants will be expected to learn and provide interpretation at our museum sites, assist researchers in the Genealogy Centre and Archives, and perform research as required. Knowledge of French and English is required. Curatorial Assistants will also be expected to accession artifacts, improve a specified number of existing accession records, assist in the creation and mounting of exhibits and assist with moving artifacts to the Society’s onsite storage facility.

The ideal candidate will be working toward the completion of a history, museum studies, archival studies or related degree. An interest in or knowledge of the history of the Annapolis Royal region is considered an asset. The candidate should be personable and interested in working with the public. As there is some need to work with digitizing collections records, the candidate should be familiar with databases currently in use by Canadian museums and Microsoft Office. The Annapolis Heritage Society owns and operates the O’Dell House Museum, Sinclair Inn National Historic Site and the AHS Archives and Genealogy Centre, Shaffner lighthouse, and Victoria Beach lighthouse. Additionally, the Society operates North Hills Museum in Granville Ferry, Nova Scotia on behalf of the Nova Scotia Museum.

The Society’s mandate is to preserve, promote and present the history of the Annapolis Region. This mandate is achieved through the Society’s artifact and archival collections, interpretive programming and ongoing research activities.

While we are a small community with a population of 480 people, we have been the recipients of numerous national and international awards. Our community has been recognized as a National Historic District, was the recipient of the 2004 LivCom award as the World’s Most Liveable Community, was the 2006 Prince of Wales Prize winner for conservation of built heritage, the 2006 National Communities in Bloom winner for small communities, the 2007 Arts Community and Culture Recognition Award, the 2007 Mayflower Communities Cooperation Award for active living strategy, the 2008 Communities in Bloom International Winner for communities under 2000 people, the 2008 Lieutenant Governor’s Community Spirit Award, the CBC Maritimes Cultureville Award for 2012, and the 2015 Garden of the Year for the Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens.

In addition to the three museums operated by our Society, Annapolis Royal has two Parks Canada National Historic Sites, a live theatre, an art gallery and the Annapolis Royal Historic Gardens.
