The Collections Assistant will assist Dalnavert’s Curator and Collections Registrar in the research, care, and preservation of the Museum’s extensive collection. Collection duties will be interspersed with some daily operations, depending on scheduling, that will include the occasional delivery of guest services at the reception desk and house and garden tours.
Key activities include:
• Collections management support; registration and documentation of artifacts, making Dalnavert Museum’s collection more accessible to the public.
• Preventative conservation support; helping to implement our environmental and pest management control programs, as well as ensuring the preservation of our historic house by helping implement our collections care program.
• Research; making the history of Dalnavert, early Winnipeg, and the Victorian era accessible and relevant to our volunteers, staff, and public, and encouraging conversations about immigration and reconciliation.
• Training and supervising volunteers onsite
• Providing exhibits, programs, heritage house and garden tours for members and public; assisting with community programs (lectures/presentations/panels/readings) that serve diverse community groups in Winnipeg.
Candidates interested in this position should demonstrate the following education, experience and skills:
- Upper-level University or College education in any of the following areas is preferred: Collections Management, Museum Studies, Humanities (History, Canadian Studies, Political Science, Anthropology, Art History, and Fine Arts) OR Communication Arts and Information Technology.
- Demonstrated interest in Canadian historical perspectives is an asset: e.g., social and political history, built heritage, material culture, interpretation and story-telling
- Computer proficiency, including MS Word, Excel, and databases is preferred
- Experience working with artefacts and digital photography is an asset
- Proficiency in spoken and written English is essential additional language skill an asset
- First Aid/CPR training is an asset
- Excellent oral, communication and organizational skills, accuracy, attention to detail, friendly, open to learning, self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a team
- Physical demands of this position include sitting at a desk, using a computer, climbing stairs, and standing for an hour or more at a time
- Physical dexterity to handle collection artefacts by hand
- Occasional evening work may be required
Interviews will be conducted in early May, 2018. This position is dependent upon funding approval from the Young Canada Works program. Applicants wishing to be considered for this position should be registered in the YCW in Heritage Organizations candidate job bank.

Dalnavert Museum strives to insure a fair balanced recruitment process. All applications received by the deadline will be reviewed by the Executive Director and the Curator and Administrative Coordinator.
