The McMichael Canadian Art Collection (www.mcmichael.com) is recruiting for a Curatorial Research Assistant, for the summer term from May 14 to August 31, 2018.

The scope of the intern’s work will first consist of research of artworks in the permanent collection of the gallery as well as prospective acquisitions. The interpretive material which is the end goal of the overarching project is to provide support to professional curatorial team in the dissemination of information about Canadian art and artists to students, art professionals and the public.

The intern will also be assisting in the development of upcoming exhibition(s) and research on art and artists in and outside of the permanent collection. The outcome of the research would be interpretive text material disseminated through the gallery’s database, website, exhibitions, and even future publications.

The Research Assistant will also provide administrative support to the Curatorial department consisting of responding to public inquiries via telephone and email, organizing and maintaining curatorial research files, attending meetings, and other curatorial administrative functions. Opportunities to contribute to grant writing and assistance with collection digitization may also be available. Records management work may also be required.

The successful candidate will have some knowledge in Canadian art (aboriginal art including First Nations, Métis or Inuit) which they will further develop by conducting research on works and artists that exist in the McMichael permanent collection and in collections on loan to the gallery.

The Research Assistant’s project will involve the collation of research material that requires fluency in English=, although a fair understanding of French would be an asset. Project activities will take place at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg, Ontario, except where research needs dictate otherwise.

The ideal candidate will be a student with three years university education in Art History or a specialty in Museum Studies; will be a strong team player, and be able to work independently when required. Familiarity with MS Word, Office, Outlook and Excel are preferred.

Rate of pay: $17.00/hour.

This position is dependent on Young Canada Works funding and must be in full time studies before and after the work term.
