The McMichael Canadian Art Collection (www.mcmichael.com) is recruiting for an Art Preparator/Installation Intern for the summer term from May 14 to August 31, 2018.

The main objective of the Preparator/Installation Intern will be to develop skills and training in standard museum practices and techniques for the areas of art handling, shipping, and storage, and exhibition preparation and installation. Working under the supervision of the McMichael’s professional art technicians, the Intern will assist with the installation of both temporary and permanent exhibitions, and the preparation of two-and three dimensional works for display, travel, and storage. In addition, the Intern will participate in a collection documentation project and learn basic collection management practices.

The successful candidate will have a passion for art in all media, and an interest in collection care, management, and exhibition and display. Other requirements include good communication and listening skills, a high level of attention to detail and accuracy, and the ability to work in a team environment, with flexibility and the ability to switch between assigned tasks. Familiarity with collection management databases and training or experience in the safe operation of power tools and equipment are assets. The successful candidate will be required to provide a police check upon obtaining the position.

Experience: prior experience in art handling and installation in a professional, public museum or gallery is an asset.

Rate of pay: $17 /hour.

This position is dependent on Young Canada Works funding and applicants must be in full time studies before and after the work term.
