The Fraser Heritage Society is a charitable non-profit, community based organization providing educational programming, historical interpretation and all visitor services to 1906 Kilby General Store Museum & 5 acre working farm. The Kilby Historic site is a provincially designated BC Heritage site. In addition the Society operates a 35 site campground, boat launch and public beach in Harrison Mills, BC. The region around Harrison Mills is considered a high unemployment area with no public transportation and can pose difficulties for students seeking employment without their own transportation. This project will enable students to earn money to help them finance their education during the summer.
Since 1998 the Fraser Heritage Society has operated the Kilby General Store Museum and Campground, we have developed enhanced partnerships with neighboring communities and four local First Nations bands. Our long standing relationship with our local First Nations allows us the unique opportunity to employ First Nations students for the positions we are requesting and create future local employment.
By working with local First Nation communities we expand our natural history interpretation and enhance the authentic experience for our visitors. The Fraser Heritage Society has the infrastructure to provide proficient administration and management as well as excellent supervisory techniques. The Young Canada Works in Heritage Organizations program assists the society’s mandate to support and showcase our unique history to the 14,000 visitors we see each year. The program specifically helps us to become sustainable; promote our collection of artifacts; to interpret the Kilby family & First Nations history; and to interpret the historical ecology of our region to our many visitors, local schools and surrounding communities.
