About St. Stephen:

St. Stephen is situated on the International Border between New Brunswick, Canada and Maine, USA. Part of this boundary is formed by the St. Croix river, a Canadian Heritage River which runs through St. Stephen and has been steeped in history since French explorers Pierre Dugua, Sieur des Mors and Samuel de Champlain first settled on St. Croix Island (also known as Dochets Island) in 1604.

St. Stephen was incorporated as a town in 1871 and in 1873 the Ganong brothers, James and Gilbert, arrived and opened a grocery store. They quickly changed their focus to making chocolates and candy and by 1900 the Ganong Chocolate Factory was the prevalent industry in the town, replacing lumber and ship building. To this day, Ganong Bros. Ltd. is an important business in St. Stephen and the reason why the town is known as “Canada’s Chocolate Town”. Each summer, during the first full week of August, the Town celebrates its rich heritage during its annual Chocolate Festival.
