Job Description:
Gallery 1C03 at The University of Winnipeg oversees the development and presentation of contemporary and historical art exhibitions and related programming on campus, as well as the preservation and presentation of the University’s collection of nearly 1200 works of Canadian art. About 400 of these pieces are displayed throughout campus on a rotational basis via the on-campus loan program while the rest are kept in storage.
The Curatorial Assistant Intern will be responsible for work in several areas:

1. Art Education: The Intern will organize and carry out educational art workshops in Gallery 1C03 as part of Community School Investigators (CSI) Summer Learning Program. The program engages children in Winnipeg’s inner-city in learning opportunities in the areas of science, math, language arts, social studies, and the visual and performing arts. The Intern will use the University’s collection of Canadian and Indigenous art as a tool for learning. Students will learn about these artworks and create their own works in response.

2. Collections Management: The intern will facilitate on-campus artwork loan requests, assess environmental conditions in proposed new loan spaces, help move art to new locations, create artwork identification labels to be placed beside displayed artworks, complete associated paperwork (loan agreements). This process enables greater access to the University’s collection throughout campus.

3. Curatorial research: The Intern will conduct research on selected artworks in the collection. This research will be collated into short essays about selected works which will be uploaded to Gallery 1C03’s section of the University of Winnipeg website.

4. Art Collection Library Management: Gallery 1C03 also oversees a small library of publications (1,000 titles) on contemporary and historical Canadian art. There are about 50 new titles that need to be accessioned into the collection database. The accession of these new titles will make them more accessible to researchers.

5. Program assistance: The Intern will support the programs of Gallery 1C03 and its partners, which may include hosting lectures and studio space. Tasks include liaison with partners and university departments as well as promotion via social media.

The student will receive training in the following: communications strategies, including use of Cascade website content management system; art education strategies; proper art handling and art hanging methods; use of the collections database FileMaker Pro (both data entry and searching functions); use of the Elsec environmental monitor to measure light, humidity and temperature levels; basic cleaning of framed artworks; creation of artwork identification labels; on-line tools for research on Canadian art; use of the Art Collection Library Resource Manual.

Qualifications:
Education: Upper level undergraduate or graduate student focused in the area of Fine Arts, Art History, Cultural Studies, Education, or a related discipline student returning to studies full time in the fall of 2018.
Experience: Experience working with collections and/or information management systems and databases would be considered an asset, as would experience within a gallery setting and working with children through the arts.
Computer Skills: Must be familiar with word-processing applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel as well as social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Familiarity with database programs such as Filemaker Pro would be assets.
Communication, Research, and Organizational Skills: The ideal candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong research skills, superior organizational skills, and possess a strong attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy, as well as the ability to set goals and work independently.
Physical Ability: The candidate must be able to negotiate stairs and be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds.
