The Manitoba Museum is Manitoba’s largest heritage centre and number one paid tourist attraction. We are seeking a Métis Material Culture Research Assistant to work with the Curator of Cultural Anthropology for the summer. The Curator of Cultural Anthropology and the Curator of the Hudson’s Bay Company Collections collaborate on the overall management of the Museum’s indigenous material culture collections. This includes research on collections and research which will aid in developing exhibit strategies for the future.

The Métis Material Culture Research Assistant will provide research support for a new approach to representing Metis material culture in the museum while maintaining and adding to our digital collaboration with communities, scholars and other museums through active participation in GRASAC, the Great Lakes Alliance for the Study of Aboriginal Arts and Cultures, a collaborative research database housed at the University of Toronto’s Museum Studies Program, The successful applicant will research and catalogue the material culture collections associated with the descendants of William and Nahoway Sinclair. We believe that there are at least five family collections related to their family, three of which are at the Manitoba Museum, and at least two more in the Parks Canada Collection. The student will also assist with photographing and organizing the information about the collections and uploading photographs and descriptive data about these collections to GRASAC, and using the system to search for related artefacts in the collections of other Canadian and European institutions.

The candidate will have upper level University or College education in any of the following areas is preferred: Museum Studies, Anthropology, Archaeology, Humanities (History, Canadian Studies, Anthropology, Art History, Fine Arts); experience working with artifacts, specimens or archival holdings is desirable; and computer proficiency, including MS Word, Excel, and databases is preferred; proficiency with digital camera and digital photo enhancement programs is preferred; proficiency in spoken and written English is essential; positive teamwork experience, self-motivation, and organizational ability is desirable; strong interest in Manitoba’s indigenous history and First Aid/CPR training are assets.

The location of the job is Winnipeg and it is a full-time temporary position commencing May 7, 2018 continuing until July 27, 2018. The incumbent will report to the Curator of Cultural Anthropology. Pay is $15.00 per hour, working Monday to Friday, 35 hours per week. Applicants must qualify under the Young Canada Works Student program (see www.youngcanadaworks.ca)

Interviews will be conducted in late April. This position is dependent upon funding from the Young Canada Works program. Applicants wishing to be considered for this job must be registered in the YCW in Heritage Organizations candidate inventory databank. YCW criteria state that candidates must be between the ages of 16 and 30 years; must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents or have refugee status in Canada; and be legally entitled to work in Canada.
