The Art Education Programming Assistant will assist Rodman Hall Art Centre in its goal to enrich lives by connecting people and art by providing accessible and meaningful opportunities for learning. The Art Education Programming Assistant will assist in developing and implementing the gallery’s education initiatives and public programs with a strong focus on developing activities directed at gallery visitors to enhance their engagement with visual arts, culture and heritage.

Recognizing that art enriches peoples’ lives, Rodman Hall seeks to provide an inspiring setting and experience for all visitors. Rodman Hall is committed to excellence in visual arts programming and education, providing services and resources to the students and faculty of Brock University, the City of St. Catharines, and the Niagara region. Nationally, Rodman Hall supports the development of artists and cultural workers in southern Ontario through the dissemination of contemporary art and the management of the region’s pre-eminent art collection. Rodman Hall is the largest public gallery in the Niagara Region and occupies a historically significant building and gardens. Rodman Hall presents diverse and changing contemporary art exhibitions in three gallery spaces as well as engaging and educational programs and outreach.

PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION AND ENGAGEMENT:
Programs and activities aim to engage visitors and foster creative thinking. Studio programs and art camps support skill building and nurture confidence and personal expression.
Participants in Rodman Hall programs have the opportunity to:
• Expand their understanding of modern and contemporary art by local, national and international artists working in a variety of media.
• View, consider, and participate in critical discussion by engaging with the temporary exhibitions and artwork from the permanent collection.
• Develop hands-on art-making skills while exploring personal creativity and imagination for all ages and abilities.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Art Education Programming Assistant will gain hands-on career training in art education by assisting Rodman Hall Art Centre in its goal to enrich lives by connecting people and art and to provide accessible and meaningful opportunities for learning. The Art Education Programming Assistant will assist in developing and implementing the gallery’s education initiatives and public programs with a strong focus on developing activities directed at gallery visitors to enhance their engagement with Visual Arts, Culture and Heritage through transformative experiences in the visual arts.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
During May and June the focus of this position will be to develop Education Programs, Community Outreach Activities and Visitor Services:
• Acting as an Assistant, support the Art Educator in research and development of new program offerings and improving existing programs. Programs include, but are not limited to: hands-on workshops, art camps, gallery outreach, programs for students and educators, animation of the historic house and exhibitions (tours)
• Development of Program components including: art activities and samples that relate to program themes, art appreciation and art historical lessons, critical thinking and discussions, recreation activities, supporting resources, marketing materials, program modifications for modifications to accommodate accessibility concerns for persons with disabilities, tour scripts and visual aids

During July and August the focus of this position will be to assist with delivery of Art Education Programs (primarily Summer Art Camp) and Interpretive Programs (Historic and Exhibition Tours)
• Instruction of participants through a variety of formats including public speaking, multimedia presentations, demonstrations, hands-on activities and interpretive tours
• Working with the Summer Art Instructor: Responsible for the day-to-day operations of activity assistance, prep, materials, studio cleanliness. Assist visiting artists
• Ensure all activities, materials and procedures are safe and inclusive for youth participants, other staff and volunteers
• Engage with youth participants, other staff and volunteers in a meaningful and appropriate manner

OTHER JOB DUTIES FOR THE DURATION OF THE POSITION:
• Assist with community and outreach events and promotion. Engage with social media
• Deliver tours of the art exhibitions and historic home as scheduled
• Participate in training sessions
• Provide assistance to Gallery visitors as needed; Assist with other duties as assigned

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:
• A student working towards a post-secondary degree in Visual Arts, Education, Child and Youth Studies, or Graphic Design preferred
• Comprehensive knowledge of studio-based art-making techniques and materials is required
• Strong teaching, leadership and communication skills required. Previous experience working with and instructing children in a group setting is an asset
• Enthusiasm, creativity and a commitment to provide a positive experience for visitors of all ages and abilities
• Knowledge of Canadian Art history including contemporary Canadian Art is an asset
• Organized, responsible, punctual and reliable
• Outgoing with excellent interpersonal and communication skills
• Computer Skills: Assistant will be expected to use word processing, email, complete on-line research. Promotion of programs through social media using Facebook, Twitter etc. Photo Editing with Adobe Photoshop.
• A proven ability to work independently as well in a team
• Police clearance check is REQUIRED before work term begins
