Job Description: The Ontario Heritage Trust is dedicated to identifying, protecting, renewing and promoting Ontario's rich and diverse built, cultural and natural heritage that has influenced and continues to shape our society for the benefit of present and future generations. As the province's heritage agency, the Ontario Heritage Trust is entrusted with keeping Ontario's heritage alive and meaningful. Located in downtown Toronto, the successful candidate in this position will be near major museum and cultural heritage sites, several owned by the Trust. The successful candidate for the position of Field Archaeologist will assist the Trust's Senior Archaeologist during the survey and field excavations of sites on historic museum properties across Ontario as needed. This position will include fieldwork opportunities across Ontario including the Niagara Apothecary in Niagara-on-the-Lake. This position will be responsible for record keeping, field excavation, providing leadership to the team and supervising volunteers. Additional fieldwork is anticipated to be scheduled in addition to this project during the period of employment. All travel costs will be provided by the Trust. Collection management duties will include processing artifacts, rehousing collections, organizing field documentation and working with databases. Development of social media and web content will be a key feature for this position. Duties as assigned may involve archival/artifact research, file management and report production assistance.
Learning Opportunities provided: This position will allow the successful candidate to gain experience in the following: photography, excavation skills, research, public engagement, communication skills, leadership skills, working with volunteers in a museum setting, policies and procedures related to collections management of archaeological materials.
Qualifications: Senior undergraduate or current graduate student with a background in archaeology/anthropology preferred. Prior field experience (i.e. a field school) required. Physical ability to conduct manual field labour. Candidate must be available to work Tuesdays through Saturdays during the period while at the Niagara Apothecary public archaeology project ( a total of 4 weeks). Good organizational skills, ability to multi-task. Working knowledge and experience with Microsoft office programs, some experience with databases an asset.
