Summer Reading Program Coordinator

General Description
A Summer Reading Program Coordinator is primarily responsible for the planning and implementation of the Library’s summer reading activities for children from ages 4 through 12. In addition the Summer Reading Program Coordinator will lead a team of Summer Programmers throughout the summer reading program.

Organizational Relationships
This position reports to the Head of Youth Services.

Classification
This position is considered a student work experience per the Collective Agreement between The Medicine Hat Library Board and The Canadians Union of Public Employees Local 46; as such it is classified as a temporary government position without union membership.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
To design and run programs using the Summer Reading theme to reinforce literacy skills and interest in reading as an enjoyable lifetime activity.
Serves as the team leader to ensure the successful implementation of the programs throughout the summer.
Supervising and encouraging active involvement of participants in the Library’s summer reading activities as part of the summer programming team.
To evaluate the summer programs including suggesting improvement in their design and/or delivery
Gathers and records statistics
Participates in training sessions as required
Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
Proficient in verbal and written English (required)
Proficient in basic math (required)
Excellent communication skills (required)
Good organizational skills (required)
Good keyboarding and mouse skills and the ability to work in a Windows environment
Knowledge of computer software applications as relevant to the position
Good judgement in dealing with public interactions
Able to work with children and their families
Able to adapt to new technologies and procedures
Knowledge of library policies and procedures

Physical Requirements
Sit at a computer for extended periods of time
Able to stand for extended periods of time
Able to participate in active games with children
Fine and coarse motor skills
Good hand/eye coordination
Able to lift weights up to 5 kg

Minimum Required Training and Experience
Completion of High School Diploma
AND
Enrolled in an ALA Accredited MLIS Program

Wage
$22.00/hour +4% vacation pay
