Overview: The Living Museum internship requires a recent graduate with a background in sustainability that can advance campus wide biodiversity networks. The UBC Botanical Garden is a 100-year-old living collection of a scientifically significant living museum. We host plant material from around the world that we believe may be beneficial as an adaptive strategy for climate change and safe keeping of the biological flora. We host over 50,000 species in 7,000 taxa in the Faculty of Science. UBC Botanical Garden was once throughout the UBC campus and we recognize the impact of development and want to strengthen biodiversity conservation on campus. This project has emerged from the UBC Biodiversity Steering Committee, which has a broad spectrum of respected stakeholders to advance this work. The student will network with experts from various Faculties and be supported by Associate Directors at UBC Botanical Garden.

Qualifications: We encourage recent graduates from a variety of disciplines (Science, Sustainability, Botany, Landscape Architecture, Forestry, etc.). Applicants with experience with biodiversity education and/research, program coordination, meeting facilitation, customer service, grant writing and communication skills are invited to apply. UBC is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from all qualified applications. We provide training, abide by UBC Risk Management policies and offer an inclusive and respectful workplace.
Job Description: The objective of the internship is to support the UBC Biodiversity Project which aims to conserve and enhance biodiversity on the University of British Columbia campus. With support from the UBC Biodiversity Steering Committee, the intern will be involved with developing a baseline inventory of UBC’s natural assets, researchers, research projects, built environmental projects (Green Corridors, Bird Friendly Designs etc.) and student opportunities in biodiversity (classes, outreach, students groups etc.). This inventory will serve as an online resource to inform and integrate campus-specific biodiversity research across different faculties, operational departments, and the campus community.

The inventory will showcase biodiversity initiatives on campus and will require integrated systems thinking to raise overall awareness of biodiversity within the campus community. The intern will be required to connect with diverse stakeholders and will facilitate collaboration and sharing. The resulting culmination of research and engagement will inform the development of a future Urban Forest Management Plan and Biodiversity Strategy, which will identify opportunities to improve biodiversity, sustainability, and resilience on UBC’s campus.
