Curatorial Assistant – Archaeology
The Manitoba Museum is Manitoba’s largest heritage centre and number one paid tourist attraction. We are seeking a Curatorial Assistant- Archaeology. Reporting to the Curator of Archaeology, the Curatorial Assistant (Archaeology) will assist the Curator in developing a scientific research plan for artifacts being used in the archaeology exhibits for the Museum’s renewal project. The position requires research and writing skills, interpersonal skills, and organizational ability.

Project Description:
The project goal is to provide the Museum with research reports on specific artifacts related to the archaeology collections. The Curatorial Assistant (Archaeology) will report directly to the Curator of Archaeology. The Manitoba Museum is engaged in “Bringing Our Stories Forward”, a large renewal project for a number of its galleries. One focus for renewal is updating the stories of Indigenous Manitobans throughout the galleries. The contemporary Indigenous story is built upon a rich history that connects the present to the past. The reports produced by the Assistant will feed directly into gallery narratives and exhibits of the Grasslands Gallery.

Project objectives include:
1) Review techniques for analysis on lithic sourcing, residue analysis, and geochemistry that will be useful in exhibit development.
2) Review archaeological collections from the Grasslands area to identify artifacts for analysis.
3) Contact research laboratories and Universities to investigate research time and prices on various types of analysis.
4) Assist in developing lists of potential artifacts for inclusion in exhibit and prioritize analysis
5) Catalogue new collections acquired for gallery renewal.
6) Research and writing summary reports on the results of the analysis according to strict timelines and page counts.
7) Research and writing of reports on the provenance of artifacts related to specific topics.
8) Attendance and participation in meetings related to BOSF project. This entails working with the Curator of Archaeology, exhibit design firm to further develop gallery narratives and exhibits.
9) Participate in and support tasks related to the Archaeology section and BOSF activities.

Description of Tasks:
• Research and writing of Archaeology topics as determined by Curator of Archaeology. This will include independent research with use of museum and university libraries, archives and online resources.
• Meet with Curator of Archaeology weekly to review progress and refine project goals.
• Meet with Museum’s internal teams and Curator of Archaeology as per Project Charter to discuss subject interpretation, content production, etc.
• Provide research reports with full citations
• Provide artifact lists with full descriptions (age, location, cultural affiliation) for each artifact

Work Plan (31 weeks)
• (1 weeks): Orientation, planning work schedule.
• (24 weeks): Research and writing 5 exhibit topic reports and associated artifact lists
• (1 week): Project Conclusion; Completion of Final Reports; Post Project Debriefing

3. Minimum Required Qualifications:
• A minimum of Bachelor of Arts in Archaeology, Anthropology, or other relevant degree
• Experience or study of archaeological collections
• Demonstrate an ability to communicate effectively (sample of research paper with citations is encouraged)
• Must be able to meet all eligibility requirements set forth by the funder, Young Canada Works:
• A Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada; Note: Non-Canadian students holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible.
• Legally entitled to work in Canada;
• Between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
• Willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
• Will not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week**) while employed with YCW;
• Must be an unemployed or underemployed college or university graduate, that is, not employed full-time;
• A recent graduate who has graduated from college or university within the last 24 months at the start of employment;
• Not receiving Employment Insurance (EI) benefits while employed with YCW;
• Have not previously participated in or been paid under this or any other Career Focus internship program funded under the Government of Canada's Youth Employment Strategy.
