If you are outgoing, flexible, self-directed, and have an interest community engagement join us at the High River Library. The High River Library is a public library providing a variety of programs and services to residents of High River and the surrounding area. The Community Librarian fosters relationships with new Canadians, plans and delivers programming for children and teens, performs outreach functions with community groups and assists with strategic planning. Anticipated start date: August 21, 2017.
High River is a beautiful small community (population 13,420) in southern Alberta located 68 kilometres south of Calgary and less than an hour east of the Rocky Mountains. The town is rich in arts and culture, notable residents have included the writer, W.O. Mitchell and former Prime Minister Joe Clark. Duties and Responsibilities
• to develop activity plans and schedules for various age groups;
• to engage new Canadians with the library through programs, meaningful volunteer opportunities, and outreach;
• to create and conduct programs with a focus Canada's culture and heritage for children and teens so that they will learn about their country and experience the library as a place where they have fun, explore various literacies, and develop skills through exposure to books, reading, and related activities;
• to partner with schools and other community groups and participate in community outreach activities offering information and promoting library programs and resources;
• to promote the library within the community and at events;
• to develop promotional materials, including posters, flyers, and social networking and writing a column for the newspaper;
• To work with the library director on strategic planning initiatives including community consultation;
• to track and report successes and failures with recommendations for the future;
• to perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
• A background in Library and Information Studies, Elementary or Secondary Education, or Community Development is an asset;
• Must be a recent (within 24 months) graduate of a post-secondary institution who is between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment and legally entitled to work in Canada;
• Must unemployed or underemployed, that is, not employed full-time;
• Satisfactory background screening including a Criminal Record Check;
• Possession of a valid driver’s license;
• Must be available to work day, evening and weekend shifts.
