The Friends of Royal Alberta Museum Society is looking for a Geological Collections Assistant to work with the Geology Program at the Royal Alberta Museum. The job involves a variety of tasks related to maintaining and developing the Geology Collection as well as potential field work. The Assistant will work with the collections database to update existing records and add information for new specimens. Maintenance work in the Geology Collection including storage upgrades and conservation initiatives will be carried out by the Assistant. This position will involve collecting, summarizing and digitizing information related to the Geology Collection.

Duties:
1. Involved in storage upgrades (storage improvements and reorganization)
2. Photographing specimens and scanning of historical photos and slides
3. Researching, compiling and composing information (geological and historical) to support exhibit development
4. Potential field work

Qualifications:
1. Background knowledge of earth science and mineralogy
2. Familiarity with digital photography and SLR Cameras an asset
3. Experience with computers (Windows platform) and with database software, Excel, and Photoshop

Terms and Conditions:
1. Work will be carried out primarily at the Royal Alberta Museum and possibly at field locations around Alberta
2. Employment hours are 7 hours per day weekdays
3. Position runs for a maximum of 16 weeks at a pay rate of $21.00/hour

Additional information and career-related job-skills:

1. This position will provide training in Earth Science and Museum Curation
2. Development of Software skills (Database, Excel, Photoshop)
3. Increased knowledge of Canadian minerals and geological specimens
4. Applicant must meet the General Student Eligibility Criteria of the Young Canada Work Program.
