Under the supervision of the WAG's Librarian, the Archival Assistant will work on the initial appraisal and arrangement of the printed curatorial records at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. The Winnipeg Art Gallery is Manitoba's largest art museum. The Gallery has one of the art largest libraries in Western Canada and also has an archives.

Typical duties of the Archives Assistant include:
-reading of the curatorial files
-elimination of the redundancies in the holdings reducing the number of records
-removal of unstable materials from the papers
-description of the remaining records
-proper housing of the records in archival quality materials
-other archival duties as they arise

The position of Archives Assistant calls for a student who is currently enrolled in studies of history or art history or a student who requires some archives experience before formal archival studies. The candidate must be details-oriented and capable of working independently while keeping the position manager informed.

The Winnipeg Art Gallery is the city's largest art museum. Other cultural and heritage attractions of note includee the Manitoba Museum, Assiniboine Park (Pavilion Gallery and the Zoo); the Saint-Boniface Museum and various historic sites in the immediate area such as Riel House, the Forks National Historical site and Dalnavert Museum. For summer 2017, there will be additional attractions relating to Canada's 150th anniversary.
