The scope of the intern’s work will consist of research of artworks in the permanent collection of the gallery, preparing interpretive material to provide support to the professional curatorial team in the dissemination of information about the Art of Canada to students, art professionals and the public.
The intern will assist in the development of upcoming exhibition(s) for Canada’s 150 anniversary celebration and an online project supporting the McMichael’s reach to the indigenous community through research of art and artists in and outside of the permanent collection. The outcome of the research would be interpretive text material disseminated through the gallery’s database, website, exhibitions, and even future publications, or as groundwork in the development of future exhibitions.
The Curatorial Research Intern will also provide administrative assistance to Curators consisting of responding to public inquiries via telephone and email, organizing and maintaining Curatorial research files, attending meetings, and other curatorial administrative functions. Records management work will also be required.
The successful candidate will have knowledge in Canadian art with specific focus on Indigenous art which they will further develop by conducting research on works and artists that exist in the McMichael permanent collection and in collections on loan to the gallery. English as a first language, with working knowledge of French or Inuktitut are assets.
Project activities will take place at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinburg, Ontario, except where research needs dictate otherwise.
The ideal candidate will be a graduate of Art History or Museum Studies, will be a strong team player, and be able to work independently when required. Familiarity with MS Word, Office and Excel are preferred. Interviews will take place on site of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection in the summer.
Posting of position will be on the open job board of CMA and on the website of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, and open to all qualified applicants. Interview questions will be established based on the top competencies required to do the job. Interviews will take place on site of McMichael Canadian Art Collection, by Human Resources and a representative from the Curatorial department. All candidates will be asked and graded based on the same interview questions including compliance with YCW Building Careers in Heritage internship eligibility requirements. This position is dependent on Young Canada Works Building Careers funding and applicants must have graduated within the previous 24 months.
