The University of Manitoba’s School of Art Gallery (formerly Gallery One One One) serves the School of Art, the University, and the public. The Gallery exhibits and collects contemporary and historical art, maintaining, researching and developing collections in the School of Art’s Permanent Collection and the FitzGerald Study Centre collection.
Summary of Duties
Reporting to the Gallery Administrative Assistant at the School of Art Gallery, the incumbent will work in two sections of the gallery – the exhibition spaces and the collection - with the primary focus on the gallery exhibitions and secondary focus on collection activities.

The Program Assistant will develop content for the Gallery’s website based on the first three decades of the activities and programmes of Gallery 1.1.1. At the same time, the incumbent will develop a series of four exhibitions based on that research, and will write an essay and prepare a small brochure for each exhibition. Curatorial and technical assistance will be provided as needed.

The Program Assistant will also assist with aspects of the Gallery’s main gallery programming and collection activities, including the installation and promotion

The Program Assistant will also assist with the processing donations to the Gallery’s Permanent Collection.

The position of Gallery Intern will be of particular interest to a graduate who wishes to pursue further academic or curatorial work, in addition to work in museums or galleries. The School of Art Gallery is a small and very active gallery where the Intern will be given many responsibilities and opportunities to learn and de- velop. The Intern will work closely with the Gallery Administrative Assistant and Gallery Projects Assistant who are under the direc- tion of the Director of the School of Art and Gallery.

Education and Experience:
As an ideal candidate, you:
•Have a Bachelor’s degree in either Art History or Studio Art
•Possess a strong interest in Canadian art
•Demonstrable strengths in research and writing and proficiency in Microsoft Word
•Ability to use digital photo editing software is an asset.
•Experience handling art would be beneficial.
•Experience working or volunteering in public gallery, museum or library is desirable.
•Eligible to participate in the Young Canada Works program
