SALARY RANGE: $13.27 - $14.63 per hour

ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION
The Heritage Services section is part of the Legislative and Planning Services Department of the Regional Municipality of Halton. Heritage Services preserves the material and cultural heritage of Halton Region, acquires and shares knowledge of the Region’s historical and natural world and encourages discovery, appreciation and understanding of the Region’s heritage. Based in the Kelso Conservation Area in Milton, Ontario, Heritage Services offers travelling exhibits and public programming and supports the preservation and appreciation of the heritage of Halton Region through partnerships with museums, archives, historical societies, cultural organizations and attractions.
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
To work with the Education and Community Coordinator to organize school programs for students K-12 and the museum’s summer day camp program for children ages 7-10. This position will be responsible for leading the daily delivery of school and camp programs, working closely with the Public Programmer and Community and Outreach Programmer who will assist in the delivery of school and camp programs.
PREFERRED BACKGROUND:
Applicants should be enrolled or preparing to enrol in a relevant college or university program such as education, museum studies, public history or outdoor education. A minimum of six months experience working with children is required. Experience working in a camp setting is preferred. Must have valid First Aid and CPR training or be willing to obtain. Demonstrated strong programming, leadership, public speaking and organizational skills are necessary. A high degree of computer literacy is required, experience with Microsoft Office, Outlook and Word is essential. Delivery of school and camp programs requires the ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, hike 3-5km of uneven terrain and swim. Familiarity with a museum, heritage, cultural institution or outdoor work setting is an asset. The successful candidate must be proficient in English.
A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle are required since there is no public transportation to the museum site and the position will also involve working at off-site locations. The successful candidate will be made an offer of employment on condition that the Regional Municipality of Halton receives a current (obtained within the past six (6) months), original and acceptable Criminal Record Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Screen by your first day of employment
DUTIES:
Under the supervision of the Education and Community Coordinator, and with volunteers and other staff as required, the School and Camp Programmer will participate in a wide range of programming activities with a specific focus on producing and delivering school and camp programs.
Primary Duties:
• Organize and deliver the museum’s educational programs to students of various ages from visiting schools. Including preparation, set up, take down and instruction through various formats such as public speaking, multimedia presentations, hands-on activities and interpretive hikes;
• Lead the delivery of summer day camp for children ages 7-10. Planning and developing weekly games and activities while providing daily supervision and care to camp participants (6 weeks);
• Assist in the development of new curriculum-based programs; and
• Create and administer program evaluation.
Secondary Duties:
• Provide onsite tours and promotion of museum’s exhibits and programs;
• Attend community and outreach events to promote museum programs and offerings;
• Assist with the delivery of onsite public programs;
• Assist with other areas of the museum’s operation;
• Other duties as assigned.

Applicants must:
• Be legally entitled to work in Canada;
• Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada;
• Be between 16 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
• Be registered in the YCW on-line candidate inventory;
• Be willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment;
• Not have another full time job (over 30 hours per week);
• Have been a full-time student (as defined by his/her educational institution) in the semester preceding the YCW job; and
• Intend to return to full-time studies in the semester following the YCW job.
