Are you a recent university graduate looking for an opportunity to work up-close and personal with an exciting archival project? The Cape Breton University Beaton Institute seeks a mature, motivated individual to assist with its Legacy Data Project. If you are a recent university graduate with a high degree of attention to detail and a thorough approach to projects, then this could be the job for you.

The Legacy Data Technician will work with the Archivist and Digital Archivist to transfer legacy data from multiple electronic and paper formats (Microsoft Word, Excel, PDF, etc) into the Beaton Institute’s new collections management software, Access to Memory (AtoM). The archive launched the Beaton Institute Digital Archives (beatoninstitute.com) in March 2015. AtoM has become the international standard for archival institutions worldwide to share their archival holdings online. The legacy data to be entered includes a wide range of electronic and paper documents which include temporary accessions, past and current accessions, donor information, and deeds of gift. The Legacy Data Technician will also assist with reference duties and therefore keep regularly scheduled hours and help users with their research inquiries.

Our ideal candidate has an undergraduate or graduate degree in Archival Studies, history, cultural studies, or an equivalent field related to culture and heritage. The candidate should be proficient in the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and internet applications. While not a requirement, a background in information science and proficiency with database software are considered an asset. Familiarity with AtoM is considered an asset.

The candidate must have excellent oral and written language skills. S/he should have strong interpersonal, planning, and organizational, and time management skills. S/he must also possess the ability to work independently and/or collaborative with others to achieve overall goals and objectives.

The Beaton Institute is the regional archives for Cape Breton Island and the repository for historically significant records of Cape Breton University.
