The University of Victoria Libraries' Digital Scholarship and Strategy Unit is seeking one dynamic and self-motivated YCW student for the position of Digital Library Data Engineer.

In this position, the successful candidate will assist with the launch of a new digital discovery and curation platform through the transformation and migration of metadata from one data model to another, as well as train a small number of library staff in learning the Python scripting language. The YCW student will have the opportunity to work with a number of different library systems, and will be encouraged to create innovative workflows and tool sets. The duration of the position is from Monday May 15, 2017 – Friday, August 25, 2017 and pays $14.69/hour (inclusive of benefits + 4% vacation pay). Excellent writing and communication skills are a must. English fluency is essential; and although French is not required, it will be considered an asset.

The University of Victoria Libraries and Archives supports a variety of digital initiatives to promote wider access to its unique collections. The digital content ranges from medieval manuscripts to archival materials from the late 20th and early 21st century. Our open access collections provide public access to unique cultural and historical artefacts from Vancouver Island, BC and the world. These include newspapers, maps, and primary sources on anarchist studies, arts and culture, environmental studies, literary history and criticism, political and historical affairs, transgender studies, and women's studies.


Tasks include, but are not limited to:
- extracting metadata from relational databases and APIs
- transforming and cleaning metadata to meet defined standards for Fedora ingest
- loading metadata and objects into Hydra/Fedora using APIs
- indexing object metadata and testing discovery tools to ensure accuracy
- troubleshooting and problem-solving technical issues related to tools and APIs
- creating documentation as needed to outline data migration tasks, workflows, and decisions
- attending regular meetings with a project team that will include librarians, programmers, and library staff
- providing regular mentorship and learning support to library staff who are learning to use the Python scripting language to parse and transform textual records

In order to be most successful, the candidate should:
- be an upper level undergraduate student who is currently enrolled at a Canadian university
- have a good working knowledge of Python
- have a good working knowledge of regular expressions
- be familiar with SQL and with relational database structures
- be able to work both collaboratively and independently
- be a good independent learner and problem solver
- have strong written and verbal communication skills in English
- have some previous experience tutoring, training, or teaching
- be interested in helping others to develop their technical skills
