Tuesday-Saturday, May 23-July 29 (10 Weeks)

The Library Assistant position at the Salt Spring Island Public Library is suitable for a student who wants to gain valuable and rewarding work experience in a busy library, who likes to work with youth on summer projects and programs, and is interested in learning more about their Canadian literary heritage. The ideal candidate will have good English communication skills, and a strong interest in working with children and a cross section of the public. The position requires that the candidate be able to pay attention to detail and be able to focus on task and projects. Knowledge, interest, and experience in working with children, and knowledge and interest in Canadian literature are assets. Strong computer skills are required.

Orientation and Training
A comprehensive orientation and training, including workplace safety, will be provided inthe first week of employment and in that time period the student will complete an orientation and training to perform most library tasks, including computer and library management systems. The student will also complete an orientation and overview of the main summer programs and projects, including the library's children's programs.

After the initial training program is complete, the student will work closely with the Librarian and Chief Librarian, and will have weekly check-in meetings with the Librarian.

Supervision
The student will be supervised by two professional librarians, Karen Hudson, and Nikky McCarvill. Learning assistance will primarily be guided, hands-on learning, following the initial week-long training period. The training period will be a combination of job-shadowing and hands-on learning.

For selected projects, the student may also be supervised in part by experienced volunteers such as the Children’s Librarian for the Children’s Library programs. The successful applicant will be able to work more independently as the summer progresses.
